ARTIST STATEMENT

My work focuses on our culture of vulgarity, specifically how graphic or explicit images are politicized and gendered in our society. Because contemporary culture is saturated by the political, I feel my art has to invoke the grotesque nature of our present climate through humor. In depicting the tropes of gendered activities, I celebrate how women collectively tackle issues of agency and power. Through my use of line, bold colors, and negative shapes, my work aims to be a direct cultivation of discomfort.

Drawing inspiration from the graphics and simple colors of 1960s protest posters, the bright colors and uncomplicated nature of my work intend to focus attention on images that embody the power of feminist discourse. I have turned to drawing to chronicle my life growing up as a woman; what it means both personally and collectively to menstruate, masturbate, get rejected, fall in love, have sex, etc. My work is a call for the reclamation of women's sexuality and the refusal to submit to unrealistic expectations that have been forced upon us.
